Heavy-duty drainage for green roofs and podium decks

UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane is a high-performance protection and drainage membrane for intensive green roofs, podium decks and other heavily loaded landscaping applications.

The two-layer product combines an impermeable 11mm HDPE drainage membrane with a high-quality polypropylene geotextile permanently bonded to its upper surface. Water passes through the filter fabric and into the studded drainage cavity, allowing it to move quickly across the surface while helping prevent soil and other particles from obstructing the drainage path.

With a compressive strength of over 500kN/m², it is particularly well suited to projects where deeper substrates, trees and other heavy vegetation sit alongside paved or trafficked areas.

Drainage and protection in one membrane

UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane performs two important functions within the roof build-up:

  • Fast surface drainage: The 11mm cavity provides a clear route for water to drain away.
  • Waterproofing protection: The strong membrane helps protect the primary waterproofing against mechanical damage and thermal stress.

Its bonded geotextile also:

  • Filters soil fines and other particles
  • Helps prevent siltation of the drainage cavity
  • Resists slipping and compression under increasing loads
  • Removes the need for a separate loose filter fabric directly above the membrane

The membrane can provide up to approximately 3.15l/(s·m) of drainage capacity.

Designed for high loading and traffic

UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane has a specially reinforced and grooved stud profile, with approximately 4,000 studs per square metre.

The high number of studs and smooth reverse surface distribute loads across the underlying waterproofing. With a correctly specified base and sub-base above it, the membrane can form part of systems supporting heavy vehicles and heavily landscaped intensive green roofs. Suitable applications include:

  • Intensive and extensive flat green roofs
  • Podium decks
  • Buried roofs
  • Balconies and terraces
  • Roof gardens with trees and deep substrates
  • Landscaped areas beside vehicle routes
  • Walkable slabs and paving
  • Drivable pavements
  • Recreational spaces and public landscaped areas

It is especially useful where planted and paved zones meet, as the same membrane can continue beneath both types of build-up.

Innovative interlocking joints

The studs along the outer rows have specially designed indentations. When adjoining sheets overlap, a row of studs securely interlocks with the neighbouring membrane. This push-button connection:

  • Helps prevent movement between adjoining sheets
  • Makes alignment easier
  • Supports quicker installation
  • Does not depend on dry weather in the way that some taped joints do

Compatible jointing tape can still be installed between the sheets where a fully sealed connection is required.

Impact sound reduction

UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane has been tested to BS EN ISO 10140 and can provide impact sound reduction of up to 34dB within suitable insulated flat roof structures.

This may provide an additional benefit for balconies, terraces, podiums and other areas exposed to regular foot traffic.

Where UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane fits in the system

A typical horizontal build-up may include:

  1. Structural roof deck
  2. Vapour-control and insulation layers, where specified
  3. Primary waterproofing
  4. Root barrier, unless the waterproofing is root resistant
  5. UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane 2m x 15m
  6. Green roof substrate, base material or landscaping build-up
  7. Vegetation, paving or another suitable finish

Where separate root protection is required, install the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier beneath UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane.

Installing UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane horizontally

The surface of a large flat roof or deck should have a gradient of at least 2%. Complete the primary waterproofing and any required root-protection layer before installing the membrane.

  1. Unroll UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane across the waterproofed surface with the bonded geotextile facing upwards.
  2. Pull back the geotextile beside the flange of the preceding sheet.
  3. Position the adjoining roll so the specially shaped outer studs overlap and interlock.
  4. Apply compatible jointing tape between the sheets where a completely sealed connection is required.
  5. Where the roll needs to be extended lengthways, place the next section beneath the preceding membrane with a 200mm overlap.
  6. Cut the membrane to fit without damaging the waterproofing beneath.
  7. Turn the membrane up adjoining walls or parapets by at least 150mm, or to the upper edge of the finished fill.
  8. Protect or cap any exposed vertical edge with a suitable sealing detail.
  9. Complete the build-up with the specified green roof substrate, base material or paving system.

A single 2m x 15m roll covers 30m². Once the complete deck has been covered, materials may be moved across it by wheelbarrow. Wheeled loaders are only permitted after at least 200mm of suitable base material has been installed.

Long-lasting, resistant construction

UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane is:

  • Waterproof and vapour resistant
  • Resistant to salts
  • Rot resistant
  • Resistant to contaminants and chemicals
  • Suitable for temperatures between -30°C and +80°C
  • Safe for contact with drinking water
  • Tested and CE marked to the relevant standard
  • Compliant with BS EN 13252

Important suitability note

UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane is a protection and drainage membrane, not a primary waterproofing or dedicated water-storage layer. It must be installed above a suitable waterproofing system, with a root barrier where the waterproofing itself is not root resistant.

Where retaining water for intensive planting is the main requirement rather than supporting exceptionally heavy loads, consider the UGR 40mm or UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Board 1m x 2m green roof solutions.

What is UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane used for?

Fast drainage and mechanical protection above waterproofing — intensive green roofs, podium decks, terraces, balconies and walkable or drivable landscaping.

Does UGR 11mm Deck Drainage Membrane include a filter layer?

Yes. A polypropylene geotextile is bonded to the upper surface.

How are adjoining rolls connected?

The shaped outer-row studs overlap and interlock; compatible jointing tape can be added for a fully sealed joint.

Does the membrane store water for plants?

No. Its main functions are drainage and protection. For water retention, consider UGR 40mm/60mm Storage & Drainage Board.
