Maximum water storage for intensive green roofs
UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Board 1m x 2m is a high-capacity water-management layer for demanding intensive green roof and hard landscaping projects.
Its deep 60mm cavities store approximately 20 litres of water per square metre, helping maintain moisture around deeper growing substrates and heavily planted areas between periods of rainfall.
The membrane is also perforated, allowing excess water to pass into the drainage space below. This balances useful water retention with effective drainage, helping prevent the substrate and plant roots from becoming saturated.
Designed for larger planting and complex landscaping
UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards are specifically designed for intensive green roofs supporting larger shrubs and trees. Its substantial storage capacity also makes it suitable for areas intended to remain without irrigation for extended periods. Typical applications include:
- Intensive green roofs with large shrubs or trees
- Heavily planted commercial roof gardens
- Residential and commercial roofs
- Children's playgrounds and recreational spaces
- Balconies and terraces
- Inverted roofs
- Landscaped areas above underground car parks
- Ground-level landscaping above basement accommodation
- Walkable decks
- Drivable decks
- Paving and slab build-ups
- Other hard landscaping designs
The membrane's high drainage capacity makes it suitable for long drainage runs and low roof slopes within a correctly specified system.
Strong enough for demanding build-ups
Manufactured from 100% recycled high-density polyethylene, UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards have an approximate compressive strength of 200kN/m² — equivalent to around 20 tonnes per square metre. This provides the strength needed to support suitable intensive planting and compatible trafficked or paved areas.
UGR 60mm Boards are:
- Extremely tough and durable
- Resistant to water
- Resistant to alkalis and saline solutions
- Resistant to organic acids
- Resistant to bacteria and fungi
- Unaffected by minerals
- Suitable for temperatures from -30°C to +80°C
- Guaranteed against deterioration for 30 years
- Tested and CE marked to the relevant standard
Managing water within an intensive green roof
UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards perform two essential functions:
- Water storage: Its 60mm cavities retain approximately 20l/m² to support intensive planting.
- Drainage: Perforations allow excess rainfall to pass into the drainage space beneath.
When the membrane is used beneath planting substrate, a separate geotextile filter layer must be installed above it. This prevents soil and fine particles from entering and obstructing the storage cavities. Use the UGR 120g Green Roof Filter Layer 1.5m x 100m.
Where UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards fit in the system
A typical intensive green roof build-up may include:
- Structural roof deck
- Primary waterproofing layer
- Root barrier
- Protection fleece
- UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards
- Separate geotextile filter layer
- Intensive green roof substrate
- Shrubs, trees or other planting
For dedicated root protection, install the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier beneath the drainage membrane. A protection fleece may also be required to help protect the waterproofing and root barrier against light mechanical damage — see the UGR Green Roof Protection Fleece 300.
Installing UGR 60mm Boards
The application surface should have a gradient of at least 2%. Complete the horizontal waterproofing, root barrier and any other specified underlying layers before positioning the membrane.
- Lay the 1m x 2m slabs horizontally with the cavity openings facing upwards.
- Position adjoining slabs edge to edge using simple butt joints.
- Overlapping is not normally required, although it can be used where necessary.
- Cut slabs to the required shape with a suitable knife, taking care not to damage the waterproofing or other underlying layers.
- For planted applications, install UGR 120g Green Roof Filter Layer across the completed surface.
- Apply the specified intensive green roof substrate above the filter layer.
- Complete the system with the chosen planting.
The manageable slab format allows individual sections to be positioned and cut without handling a large roll.
Walkable and drivable applications
For walkable areas without vegetation, a geotextile filter layer is not required. The specified base and bedding materials are applied directly onto the membrane and into its cavities before paving or slabs are installed.
Drivable applications require a suitable sub-base and bedding course between UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards and the finished pavement. The complete build-up, drainage and structural loading must be designed for the intended traffic and use.
Important suitability note
UGR 60mm Boards are intended for high-capacity intensive planting and demanding landscaping projects. Where the roof does not require 20l/m² of water storage or support large shrubs and trees, the shallower UGR 40mm Storage & Drainage Board 1m x 2m may provide a more appropriate solution.
UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards are not a primary waterproofing system and must be installed above a suitable waterproofing system.
