Protect the waterproofing beneath your green roof

UGR Green Roof Protection Fleece 300 is a mechanically strengthened fleece designed to protect the waterproofing layer within a green roof system.

Installed as part of the layered roof build-up, it helps reduce the risk of light mechanical damage during construction and after the green roof is complete. The fleece can sit beneath drainage membranes, drainage-and-storage layers or sedum trays, helping to protect the waterproofing and root barrier below.

It can also act as a separation layer between incompatible materials and hold approximately two litres of additional water per square metre.

Recycled, robust and versatile

Manufactured from recycled plastic fibres, UGR Green Roof Protection Fleece 300 combines practical protection with environmental benefits that complement a living roof. Key benefits include:

  • Made from 100% recycled material
  • Fully recyclable
  • Rot-proof construction
  • Mechanically strengthened for improved durability
  • Conforms to GRO performance requirements for a protection layer
  • Suitable as a separation layer between incompatible substrates
  • Stores approximately 2 litres of water per square metre

The fleece is approximately 2.5mm thick and weighs 300g/m², providing a protective layer without adding unnecessary bulk to the system.

Where the protection fleece fits in the system

A typical green roof build-up may include:

  1. The structural roof deck
  2. A suitable primary waterproofing system
  3. A root barrier, where required
  4. UGR Green Roof Protection Fleece 300
  5. A drainage or drainage-and-storage membrane
  6. Filter fleece, growing substrate and vegetation, or a compatible sedum tray system

Where root protection is required, install the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier beneath the protection fleece.

Installing the green roof protection fleece

The fleece is supplied as a 2m-wide roll covering 100m². To install:

  1. Complete the primary waterproofing layer and allow it to become ready for subsequent layers in accordance with its installation instructions.
  2. Install the root barrier first where the green roof design requires one.
  3. Roll the protection fleece out over the waterproofing or root barrier.
  4. Cut it to the required length using a sharp pair of scissors.
  5. Position the specified drainage membrane, drainage-and-storage layer or sedum trays directly above the fleece.
  6. Take care not to damage or displace the underlying layers while the remaining green roof components are installed.

The fleece protects the layers below from light mechanical damage caused by the drainage membrane, storage layer or sedum trays positioned above it.

Suitable drainage layers include the UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane, and the UGR 20mm / UGR 25mm Storage & Drainage Membrane, or the UGR 40mm / UGR 60mm Storage & Drainage Boards.

Storage and handling

Store the roll upright in dry conditions at temperatures between 5°C and 25°C. Keep it away from freezing conditions and direct sunlight, and protect it from prolonged UV exposure before installation.

Important suitability note

This fleece is not a primary waterproofing membrane, root barrier or drainage layer; where root protection is needed, use the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier, and install a suitable dedicated drainage membrane such as the UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane above the fleece.

What does green roof protection fleece do?

It protects the primary waterproofing and root-barrier layers from light mechanical damage during installation and throughout the roof's life, and can separate incompatible materials in the build-up.

Where should the protection fleece be installed?

Over the completed waterproofing layer and root barrier where required. The drainage membrane, storage layer or sedum trays are then installed directly above it.

Is the protection fleece made from recycled material?

Yes. It is made from 100% recycled material and is also recyclable.

How much area does one roll cover?

Each roll measures 2m x 50m and covers 100m².
