Reliable drainage for extensive green roofs

UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane is a tough, high-strength drainage layer designed to help excess water move safely through a green roof system.

Its 8mm studded recycled HDPE profile creates a clear drainage cavity above the primary waterproofing. A high-quality polypropylene geotextile is permanently bonded to the upper face, filtering soil fines and growing medium while allowing water to drain freely.

This combined drainage and filtration design saves installation time because there is no need to lay a separate loose filter fabric directly above the membrane.

Bonded geotextile for easier installation

The integrated geotextile performs several useful functions:

  • Helps stop soil and substrate fines blocking the drainage cavity
  • Allows water to flow through quickly
  • Prevents the filter fabric from slipping during installation
  • Reduces compression of the fabric into the studded profile
  • Removes the need for a separate loose filter layer
  • Helps keep the green roof build-up stable and correctly layered

With a drainage capacity of approximately 2.24l/(s·m), UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane provides effective water movement without adding a dedicated water-storage layer.

Suitable applications

UGR 8mm Membrane can be used within:

  • Extensive green roofs
  • Flat roofs and low-pitched roofs
  • Houses and residential extensions
  • Sheds, garages and garden buildings
  • Conservatories
  • Larger commercial roof projects
  • Selected intensive green roof build-ups
  • Walkable landscaping areas
  • Drivable landscaping systems

Its approximate compressive strength of 250kN/m² makes it suitable for build-ups where green roof planting and trafficable surfaces may be combined, provided that the full system is correctly designed for the anticipated loads.

Available sizes

Choose from two roll sizes:

  • 2m x 10m: covers 20m²
  • 2m x 20m: covers 40m²

The 20m² version may be more manageable for smaller roofs, DIY installations or sites with restricted access. The 40m² version reduces the number of roll changes and adjoining sections on larger areas.

Strong, durable and long-lasting

UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane is designed to provide reliable performance throughout the life of the green roof system. The membrane is:

  • Resistant to water
  • Resistant to alkalis and saline solutions
  • Resistant to organic acids
  • Unaffected by minerals
  • Resistant to bacteria, fungi and other small organisms
  • Chemically resistant
  • Suitable for temperatures between -30°C and +80°C
  • Guaranteed against deterioration for 30 years
  • Tested and CE marked to the relevant standard

Where UGR 8mm Membrane fits in the system

A typical extensive green roof build-up may include:

  1. Structural roof deck
  2. Primary waterproofing layer
  3. Root barrier, where required
  4. Protection fleece, where required
  5. UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane
  6. Bonded geotextile filter layer
  7. Extensive green roof substrate
  8. Sedum, grasses, mosses or other suitable planting

For dedicated root protection, install the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier beneath the drainage membrane. A protective fleece can also help reduce the risk of light mechanical damage to the waterproofing and root barrier — see the UGR Green Roof Protection Fleece 300.

Installing UGR 8mm Membrane

The application surface should have a gradient of at least 2%. Complete the horizontal waterproofing and install any specified root barrier or protection fleece before laying the membrane.

  1. Roll UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane out over the prepared surface with the bonded geotextile facing upwards.
  2. Cut the dimpled membrane to the required length, taking care not to damage the waterproofing or other layers beneath.
  3. Overlap adjoining rolls by approximately 100mm.
  4. Lift the loose geotextile edge and position it over the adjoining section.
  5. Where additional joint protection is required, seal the connection using a compatible jointing tape or sealant.
  6. Once installed, the membrane can immediately receive the specified extensive green roof substrate or compatible paving build-up.

The bonded geotextile remains on the upper face beneath green roof substrate.

Walkable and drivable applications

UGR 8mm Membrane can also form part of compatible walkable and drivable landscaping systems.

For walkable areas, a suitable bedding course of sand, gravel or chippings is installed between the membrane and the finished paving.

Drivable applications require a properly specified sub-base and bedding course between UGR 8mm Membrane and the finished pavement. Structural loading, drainage and the complete system build-up must be designed for the intended traffic.

Important suitability note

UGR 8mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane is not suitable for inverted warm roof applications. For an inverted warm roof or a project requiring meaningful water storage as well as drainage, consider the UGR 20mm or UGR 25mm Storage & Drainage Membranes.

UGR 8mm Membrane is also not a primary waterproofing membrane and must be installed above a suitable waterproofing system.

Does UGR 8mm Membrane store water?

It primarily provides drainage and filtration rather than dedicated storage. For water retention, consider UGR 20mm or UGR 25mm Storage & Drainage Membrane.

Does it need a separate filter fabric?

No. A polypropylene geotextile is permanently bonded to its upper surface.

Which way up should the membrane be installed?

Bonded geotextile facing upwards towards the substrate or landscaping build-up.

Can UGR 8mm Membrane be used on an inverted warm roof?

No. UGR 20mm or UGR 25mm Storage & Drainage Membrane may be more appropriate, subject to the overall specification.
