Extra-wide tape for sealing green roof membrane joints

UGR Root Barrier Overtape is a premium self-adhesive butyl rubber tape for creating long-lasting seals over membrane joints, overlaps and difficult roof details.

Its extra-wide 300mm format provides generous coverage across adjoining surfaces. A protective PET-reinforced aluminium backing improves resistance to tearing and puncturing while helping protect the joint against weather and UV exposure.

It is particularly suitable for sealing overlaps in the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier.

Reliable protection against water and vapour

The flexible butyl adhesive creates a close seal over compatible membranes and building materials. Key benefits include:

  • Excellent adhesion to a wide range of surfaces
  • Waterproof sealing
  • Protection against vapour penetration
  • Airtight jointing
  • UV and weather resistance
  • Flexibility throughout its service life
  • Good conformity around irregular shapes
  • Strong tear and puncture resistance
  • Suitable for horizontal and vertical applications

The tape can follow changes in direction and material more easily than a rigid flashing detail, making it useful around roof penetrations, corners and connections.

Suitable applications

UGR Root Barrier Overtape can be used for:

  • Sealing green roof root-barrier overlaps
  • Covering and protecting membrane joints
  • Sealing around roof windows and skylights
  • Detailing around chimneys and pipework
  • Repairs to compatible existing flashings
  • Sealing gutters and ridges
  • Detailing conservatories and porches
  • Sealing compatible cavity-drain membrane joints
  • Repairing suitable concrete cracks
  • Repairing compatible lead gutters

It can bond to suitably prepared materials including:

  • Compatible membranes
  • Concrete
  • Brick
  • Wood
  • Aluminium
  • PVC
  • Glass
  • Steel
  • Roofing felt

Always check adhesion and compatibility with the particular membrane, coating or substrate before completing the installation.

Sealing root-barrier joints

For enhanced protection at UGR Green Roof Root Barrier overlaps, position the 300mm tape centrally across the completed joint. This provides approximately:

  • 150mm coverage on one side of the joint
  • 150mm coverage on the other side

Evenly sharing the tape across the overlap provides greater protection where more aggressive plant roots are expected. See the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier.

Preparing the surface

Correct preparation is essential for a reliable bond. Before application:

  1. Make sure the substrate is dry.
  2. Remove dust, dirt and loose material.
  3. Remove oil and grease.
  4. Clear away moss and algae.
  5. Prime porous surfaces with a suitable SBR bonding additive where required.
  6. Avoid cleaning the surface with detergent, as residues can interfere with the initial bond.
  7. Check that the tape is compatible with the underlying material.

In colder weather, allow the tape to warm to a suitable application temperature before use.

Applying the overtape

  1. Measure and cut the tape to the required length.
  2. Position the strip before removing the backing paper.
  3. Peel back approximately 100mm of the release paper.
  4. Press the exposed adhesive firmly into position.
  5. Continue removing the backing gradually while applying the tape.
  6. Use a hard roller to press the complete surface firmly onto the substrate.
  7. Pay particular attention to edges, corners and overlaps.
  8. Avoid unnecessary joins in the tape wherever possible.
  9. Where several pieces are required for weathering, arrange the upper section so it overlaps down over the lower section.

The tape should be applied without creases, trapped air or unsupported sections.

Important suitability note

UGR Root Barrier Overtape is a jointing and sealing product. It is not a substitute for the roof's primary waterproofing system or for a correctly installed root barrier.

The surface must be clean, dry, stable and compatible with the butyl adhesive. Carry out a small adhesion test where the substrate or coating is uncertain.

For joints that need to be sealed between two overlapping membranes rather than covered from above, the UGR Membrane Jointing Tape 50mm x 10m may be more appropriate.

What is UGR Root Barrier Overtape used for?

Primarily sealing overlapping root-barrier joints; also flashing repairs and sealing around penetrations, windows and pipework.

How should it be positioned over a root-barrier joint?

Centre the 300mm tape over the joint for ~150mm coverage on each side.

Do I need to prepare the surface?

Yes — dry and free of dust, grease, moss and algae. Prime porous substrates with SBR; don't use detergents for final cleaning.

Can it be applied in cold weather?

Bring the tape up to a suitable temperature first so the adhesive forms a reliable initial bond.
