Seal overlapping membrane joints securely
UGR Membrane Jointing Tape is a high-tack butyl tape designed to create a continuous seal between two overlapping sheets of compatible plastic membrane.
The tape sits inside the overlap, bonding the two membrane surfaces together to help prevent the passage of water and air through the joint.
It is supplied with a removable backing strip, allowing the tape to be accurately positioned on the first membrane before the second sheet is bonded over it.
Suitable membrane applications
The tape can be used with compatible:
- Green roof drainage membranes
- Damp-proof membranes
- Cavity-drain membranes
- Vapour-control layers
- Radon membranes
- Gas-barrier membranes
- Other suitable plastic membrane surfaces
Within the UGR range, it can be used to seal compatible overlaps in the UGR 20mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane. Always check the specified jointing detail and membrane compatibility before installation.
High-tack butyl formulation
The soft butyl composition provides:
- Good initial grip to clean plastic surfaces
- A flexible seal throughout its service life
- Good conformity around membrane profiles and details
- Accurate application with minimal waste
- Water-resistant and airtight jointing when correctly installed
Because the tape remains flexible, it can accommodate normal movement within a correctly detailed membrane joint without becoming rigid or brittle.
Double-sided jointing rather than overtaping
This tape is installed between two overlapping membrane sheets. It performs a different function from a single-sided overtape, which is applied over the upper surface of a completed joint.
For wide surface sealing over a root-barrier overlap, use the UGR Root Barrier Overtape. Where a cartridge-applied adhesive is preferable for a compatible detail, consider High Strength Membrane Adhesive.
Preparing the membranes
Reliable adhesion depends on suitable surface preparation. Before applying the tape:
- Check that both membranes are compatible with butyl jointing tape.
- Make sure the contact surfaces are clean and dry.
- Remove dust, dirt, grease and loose material.
- Lay the membranes flat and remove creases from the joint area.
- Plan the overlap before removing the tape's backing strip.
Do not apply the tape over contaminated, unstable or heavily creased surfaces.
Applying the jointing tape
- Remove the tape's outer packaging.
- Unroll the required length without stretching it.
- Apply the tape, with its release backing still attached, to the first membrane.
- Keep the membrane flat and position the tape within the intended overlap.
- Press firmly along the full length to create a strong initial bond.
- Align the second membrane over the joint.
- Gradually remove the release backing while pressing the second membrane onto the exposed adhesive.
- Apply firm, even pressure through the upper membrane across the complete joint.
- Check that the tape is fully enclosed and that no creases or gaps remain.
Do not stretch the tape
Butyl tape should not be stretched while it is being unrolled or installed.
If stretched, the tape may gradually return towards its manufactured dimensions. This can pull on the surrounding membrane and create creases that compromise the finished joint.
Allow the tape to lie naturally and apply it without tension.
Important suitability note
UGR Membrane Jointing Tape is a membrane-jointing accessory and does not replace the primary waterproofing, gas barrier or other protective layer within the system.
It is intended for compatible plastic surfaces and should not be assumed suitable for every membrane formulation. Check compatibility where the membrane type or joint detail is uncertain.
