High-strength elastic membrane adhesive

High Strength Membrane Adhesive is a powerful professional adhesive for bonding and sealing compatible plastic membranes.

Its solvent-containing formulation provides extremely high adhesion, while a specialist rubber component allows the completed bond to remain permanently elastic. This makes it particularly useful where membrane overlaps, penetrations and other details require a flexible cartridge-applied adhesive rather than jointing tape.

Suitable membrane materials

High Strength Membrane Adhesive is suitable for compatible membranes manufactured from:

  • Polyethylene – PE
  • Polypropylene – PP
  • High-density polyethylene – HDPE

It can therefore be used with many common building membranes, including:

  • Green roof membranes
  • Root-barrier membranes
  • Protection and drainage membranes
  • Geotextile membranes
  • Damp-proof membranes
  • Cavity-drain membranes
  • Roof-breather membranes
  • Roofing membranes

Compatibility and bonding performance should always be tested before the main installation begins.

Green roof applications

Within a green roof system, High Strength Membrane Adhesive can be used for compatible details such as:

  • Bonding overlapping membrane areas
  • Sealing unavoidable service penetrations
  • Detailing around roof features and changes in direction
  • Joining suitable drainage membranes
  • Securing compatible membrane details where tape is impractical

The UGR Green Roof Root Barrier datasheet specifically permits High Strength Membrane Adhesive for sealing unavoidable service penetrations through the root barrier — see the UGR Green Roof Root Barrier.

It may also be used as an alternative jointing method for compatible overlaps in the UGR 20mm Deck & Wall Drainage Membrane.

When to use adhesive rather than tape

High Strength Membrane Adhesive is supplied in a cartridge and applied as a bead. This makes it useful around irregular shapes, penetrations and details where applying a continuous strip of tape may be difficult.

For straightforward membrane overlaps, the UGR Membrane Jointing Tape 50mm x 10m or UGR Root Barrier Overtape - 300mm x 20m may be more appropriate. The appropriate method depends on the membrane, joint design and required system specification.

Preparing the membranes

Correct preparation is essential for achieving a reliable bond. Before application:

  1. Confirm that both membranes or substrates are compatible with High Strength Membrane Adhesive.
  2. Test the adhesive on a small area before completing the main installation.
  3. Make sure all surfaces are completely dry.
  4. Remove dust, dirt, debris, oil and grease.
  5. Position and secure the membranes before bonding.
  6. Make sure the overlap is flat, free from wrinkles and not under tension.
  7. Plan the joint so that the cured adhesive will not be subjected to unnecessary peeling or shear stress.

Applying High Strength Membrane Adhesive

  1. Prepare the cartridge for use in accordance with the product instructions.
  2. Apply a continuous bead to one of the prepared membrane surfaces.
  3. Bring the second membrane into position without stretching or pulling it.
  4. Press the two surfaces firmly together.
  5. Use a roller or similar suitable tool to distribute pressure evenly along the joint.
  6. Check that the bond is continuous and that no gaps or creases remain.
  7. Keep the membrane free from tension, peeling and shear stress while the adhesive strength develops.

The bond strength builds gradually over time. Do not introduce tension afterwards — for example, when mounting battens beneath a vapour-control layer to prevent sagging.

Permanently flexible adhesion

Unlike a rigid adhesive, High Strength Membrane Adhesive remains elastic after application.

This allows the completed joint to accommodate normal movement within a correctly installed membrane system while maintaining close contact between the bonded surfaces.

Important professional-use warning

High Strength Membrane Adhesive is for professional use only.

It contains solvents and is based on a highly flammable liquid and vapour. It can also cause serious eye irritation.

During use:

  • Keep away from heat, sparks, flames and hot surfaces.
  • Do not smoke near the product.
  • Use outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid breathing the vapours.
  • Prevent contact with the eyes.
  • Use suitable personal protective equipment.
  • Follow all instructions and safety warnings supplied with the product.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.

Important suitability note

High Strength Membrane Adhesive is a bonding and sealing accessory. It does not replace the primary waterproofing, root barrier or drainage membrane within a green roof system.

Do not assume that it will bond successfully to every plastic, coating or treated surface. Carry out an on-site adhesion test before completing the installation.

For standard straight overlaps where a tape-based joint is specified, consider the UGR Membrane Jointing Tape 50mm x 10m.

Which membrane materials can High Strength Membrane Adhesive bond?

Compatible PE, PP and HDPE membranes. Always test adhesion before the main installation.

Does the adhesive remain flexible?

Yes. Its rubber component keeps the bond permanently elastic.

Can it be used with a green roof root barrier?

Yes, for compatible details including sealing unavoidable service penetrations. Follow the membrane's method and test first.

Is High Strength Membrane Adhesive suitable for DIY use?

No. It is a professional-use product — solvent-containing, flammable vapour, and requires ventilation and PPE.
