Create a neat, free-draining green roof perimeter

UGR Aluminium Green Roof Edge Trim provides a tidy boundary between the planted area, pebbles and open edge of a green roof.

The perforated aluminium profile helps retain loose materials while allowing water to drain freely through its 13mm holes. It can be positioned around the perimeter of a flat or low-pitched green roof, or used internally to separate different materials within the landscaping build-up.

Supplied in manageable one-metre lengths, the trim is straightforward to position, cut and connect. It is well suited to smaller domestic green roofs as well as larger projects where multiple lengths can be joined together.

Where to use the edge trim

UGR Aluminium Green Roof Edge Trim can be used as:

  • A perimeter restraint for green roof growing substrate
  • A separator between substrate and a strip of pebbles
  • A water-permeable edge at the eaves of suitable roofs
  • A boundary between different landscaping materials
  • A neat finish around domestic or commercial green roof areas
  • An edging profile within suitable garden landscaping projects

The trim is suitable for flat and low-pitched roofs with a maximum pitch of 5° when used as a water-permeable eaves upstand.

Designed for effective drainage

Water needs to move freely through the perimeter of a green roof rather than becoming trapped behind a solid retaining edge.

The 13mm holes allow excess water to pass through the aluminium trim while helping contain the growing substrate and pebbles. A strip of pebbles beside the trim can also help keep vegetation, roots and loose growing medium away from the drainage openings. See UGR Pebbles.

A practical modular edging system

The one-metre lengths form part of a simple modular system that can be adapted to suit the shape and dimensions of the roof.

Straight sections can be joined using the compatible UGR Green Roof Edge Trim Connector.

Pre-formed corners can be used to create consistent 90° perimeter details without cutting and shaping each corner by hand — the UGR Green Roof Edge Trim Internal Corner and UGR Green Roof Edge Trim External Corner.

Where a different angle is required, the straight trim can be cut with suitable tin snips and carefully formed to match the roof layout.

Installing the edge trim

Plan the perimeter and calculate the number of one-metre lengths, connectors and corners required before starting installation.

  1. Position the trim around the edge of the green roof or along the required separation line.
  2. Arrange the trim so the perforated face allows water to drain from the planted area.
  3. Join adjoining straight lengths using a compatible edge trim connector.
  4. Use the pre-formed internal or external corners at suitable 90° changes in direction.
  5. Cut and form straight lengths with tin snips where a non-standard angle is required.
  6. Where additional resistance to movement is needed, apply small strips of compatible membrane adhesive across the base at approximately 300mm intervals.
  7. Place the pebbles over the base of the trim and complete the adjoining substrate or landscaping areas.

For bonding the trim to a suitable waterproofing surface, use High Strength Membrane Adhesive - 310ml Cartridge. Always confirm that the adhesive is compatible with the waterproofing system beneath it before application.

Important suitability note

This edge trim is not suitable as a structurally effective gravel or substrate retainer on roofs pitched above 5°. Steeper green roofs require a correctly designed restraint system suited to the roof angle and expected loading.

 Material  Aluminium
 Length  1m
 Drainage-hole diameter  13mm
 Profile  Folded four times
 Drainage  Water permeable
Suitable roof types  Flat and low-pitched roofs
Max roof pitch (eaves-edge use)  5°
Compatible components  Connectors, internal and external corners

What is green roof edge trim used for?

A neat, water-permeable boundary that helps contain loose materials such as substrate and pebbles.

How are two lengths of edge trim joined?

Push the ends of both 1m lengths into a compatible connector for a longitudinal joint.

Can the trim be cut to create different angles?

Yes. Where a pre-formed 90° corner is unsuitable, cut with tin snips and form to the required angle.

Can I use this edge trim on a pitched green roof?

As a water-permeable upstand on flat and low-pitched roofs up to 5°. It must not be relied on as a structural retainer above 5°.
